The President of the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN), together with representatives from the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and international experts, inaugurated the International Workshop on the Treatment of Uncertainties for Novel Aspects of Risk Analyses, held at the Spanish regulator’s headquarters from the 31st of March to the 2nd of April.
In his opening session, the CSN President highlighted the organisation’s major commitment to international collaboration and the continuous improvement of regulatory practices through the exchange of knowledge with counterparts and industry experts. He also emphasised the significance of this workshop as a forum for discussing innovative approaches to uncertainty management in the context of safety and risk assessments.
This meeting, held within the framework of the NEA’s Working Group on Risk Assessment (WGRISK) of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI), gathered more than 60 experts from over 15 NEA member countries. Over the course of three days, participants addressed the treatment of uncertainties in risk analysis—a key element in risk-informed decision-making within the field of nuclear safety.
The event featured presentations from leading experts, including George Apostolakis of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), who delivered a keynote lecture on uncertainty management in risk-informed decision-making. The sessions focused on topics such as sensitivity in risk assessments, temporal uncertainty, and probabilistic safety evaluations.
As part of the event, which was closed by the CSN Commissioner Francisco Castejón, participants had the opportunity to visit the Fusion Laboratory of the Centre for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT, by its acronym in Spanish). At the visit, the attendees had the opportunity to learn about the nuclear fusion research and development being carried out at this facility.
WGRISK
The Working Group on Risk Assessment (WGRISK) is part of the Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) of the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). This group focuses on activities related to the use of Probabilistic Safety Assessments (PSA) and their methodologies for evaluating current and future nuclear power plants, as well as other nuclear facilities.WGRISK’s main goal is to enhance the use of PSA to improve the safety of nuclear installations throughout their full lifecycle, from design and operation to decommissioning. Its objectives include maintaining, assessing, and advancing the technical and scientific knowledge base for PSA methods, tools, data, and practices; strengthening interfaces between PSA and its supporting disciplines; and facilitating the use of risk assessment results in decision-making processes and safety management programmes.
WGRISK also serves as a forum for the exchange of information and experience on risk assessment among NEA member countries. The CSN actively participates in this group, recognising the value of its outcomes in keeping technical knowledge up to date and relevant for regulatory purposes.
